County music star George Strait has put his custom-built, hilltop Texas mansion up for sale for $7.5million.
The 12.2-acre home in San Antonio was built for the notoriously private star in the 1990s and took two years to finish.
The three bed and six bath property was designed by sculptor-turned architect Bill Tull in the upmarket neighborhood of Dominion Country Club.
It features stained-glass windows, hand-painted murals and 14 carved fireplaces, as well as stunning views of the surrounding valley.
Strait, 68, rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like Fool Hearted Memory and Amarillo by Morning, and has sold more than 100million records world-wide.
But the star is now moving because he wants ‘more space’ and to be in a more rural area, according to his realtor daughter-in-law Tamara Strait. ‘He just wanted to move further out of the city. If he could pick that house up and move it, he would. It’s still his dream home’, she said.
Tamara, of Strait Luxury and Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty, told Realtor.com that the property is unique because architect Tull has now died.
She said: ‘It could never be recreated. There will never be a house like it.’
Some of the unusual features are the shutters made of cactus and the hand-painted tiles, as well as custom doorknobs.
And there is also a giant ‘Fort Knox’ branded safe to keep valuables locked away. George Straight, pictured onstage during the 54th Academy Of Country Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 07, 2019 in Las Vegas, has sold more than 100million records world-wide The three bed, six bath, 7,925-square-foot main house also has a one-bedroom casita, or guesthouse.
The home offers soaring views of the hillside and San Antonio, near the border with Mexico.
The living room features two fire-places and a copper bar, before leading into a kitchen and formal dining room.
In the yard there is an infinity pool and spa with mosaic tiles, as well as a patio with a built-in grill and kitchen with a sink, icemaker and fridge. Strait was born in 1952 in Poteet, Texas, and was signed to MCA Nashville in 1981 before releasing his hit debut album Strait Country.A string of multi-platinum albums followed, and he was named Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year in both 1989 and 1990.In 1986 Strait and his family were struck with tragedy when his 13-year-old daughter, Jenifer, was killed in an alcohol-related car accident. In 2003 Strait received the National Medal of the Arts from President George W. Bush.In December last year Strait hit the headlines following a lawsuit that revealed he was paid $1.7million to play at Texas governor Greg Abbott’s re-election party in 2019.Abbott spent months fighting a press request under freedom of information laws that finally revealed how he spent a record-setting $5.3million, raised mostly from wealthy donors and corporate giants, as reported by ABC13.com.
