Lake Forest mansion owned by late philanthropist Nancy Hughes, widow of filmmaker John Hughes, listed for $15M

The estate of the late philanthropist Nancy Hughes – the widow of filmmaker John Hughes – on March 4 listed her 12,562-square-foot Lake Forest mansion for $15 million. Nancy Hughes, 68, died in 2019, a decade after the sudden death at age 59 of her critically acclaimed filmmaker husband, who was behind many iconic films shot in the Chicago area.

In early 2018, Nancy Hughes paid $12 million through a Delaware limited liability company for the five-bedroom Mayflower Road mansion in Lake Forest, which was built in 2009. The stone mansion has a slate roof, six full bathrooms, four half bathrooms, a first-floor primary bedroom suite, a second-floor screened porch, a second-floor billiard room, two laundry rooms with custom cabinetry, and a full basement with a large recreation room and radiant heat flooring throughout. The mansion sits on 5.23 acres on Lake Michigan.

Outside on the estate are a protected beach, a new four-person tram to the beach, a stone staircase, a loggia with radiant heat under the stone and a pool house with a living room and full kitchen. The property is fenced and gated.

It easily is Lake Forest’s highest-priced listing at present — the home with the second-highest asking price is a six-bedroom, 9,097-square-foot lakefront mansion on Stone Gate Lane, which is available for $12.5 million. It’s also the highest-priced asking price for any home on the North Shore right now, as its price tag barely edges out basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s Highland Park mansion, which recently celebrated 10 years on the market and is available for $14.85 million
