A unique waterfront compound on Lake George, in upstate New York, with a mansion, guest cottage, boathouse and 33 rentable boat slips is back on the market. Green Harbour Mansion, set prominently on Lake George’s Cooper Point, is available for $8.4 million — quite a drop from back in 2019, when it tried for $15 million. The estate is being marketed by Nic Ketter at Realize Brokers.
The private island is 3.3 acres, with 1,585 feet of lakefront, and a private sandy beach. The mansion, which now includes two seasonal rentals in the basement, was built in 1913 for Frederick F. Peabody. Of course, lake views are abundant.
Peabody was a partner in the Troy shirt-manufacturer Cluett, Peabody and Company, which made Arrow detachable men’s collars and later, shirts. Back in the day, as Vogue says , “the Arrow Collar Man was an early 20th-century sex symbol who, in his day, had about as large a place in the pantheon of hotness as Rudolph Valentino, Elvis, and the Marlboro man.” Peabody used his fortune from shirts to build, in addition to this property, an estate in Montecito, Calif. called Solana . The company was taken over in the 1980s, but the Arrow shirt brand name is still licensed.
The 14-bedroom, seven-bathroom, three-story mansion includes a formal dining room, a billiards room and a ballroom. A whole wing of the house serves as a master bedroom suite with a private balcony. All good, but the décor is a little tired and definitely could use some updating.
The island as a whole is made for fun summer living, with a diving board, rope swing, rock waterfall, greenhouse, expansive patios, numerous balconies and the sandy beach. Moneymaking opportunities, besides the two two-bedroom rental units in the mansion basement, includes renting the boat slips, and possibly renting the four-bedroom, two-bath waterfront guest cottage. In all, there are 20 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and 11,579 square feet of accommodation–plenty for any extended family and/or paying guests.
