IRISH Qantas boss Alan Joyce has splashed out €12.6 million on a waterfront mansion overlooking Sydney harbour in Australia.
The Tallaght native , 55, and his husband Shane Lloyd bought the palatial 1908 Federation residence in Mosman, an affluent harbourside suburb on the city’s lower north shore. The home previously belonged to former foreign exchange dealer Alison Ethell and her sister Jane, who bought it for less than €1 million 19 years ago.
Joyce and Lloyd’s new 631 square metre home was completely rebuilt in 2015 with Seattle architect Paul Moon transforming the house into a modern classic.
The three-storey home is now set above a large three-level tiered garden that leads directly to the water’s edge, where it has a jetty that can accommodate a 7.6 metre sailing boat.
It also has its very own shark-netted sea pool. According to designer Paul Moon, it was refurbished as “a traditional Australian Federational Style house and update the spaces with a few American touches”.
Joyce, who takes home an estimated annual salary of €1.2 million as Qantas boss, has moved from his city centre abode to the new home.
He and Lloyd also own a summer getaway house at Palm Beach, which they bought for close to €4 million in 2015.
Joyce and Lloyd were married in a lavish ceremony on the rooftop of The Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay in 2019 in front of over 100 family, friends and fellow executives.
The Dubliner previously branded his wedding “the most expensive wedding of a Tallaght man” after he donated Aus$1m (€670,000) to the Australian marriage equality campaign.
Joyce joined Australian airline Qantas in 2000 and was appointed its CEO eight years later. Qantas recently announced plans for non-stop flights from London to Australia with a blockbuster order of new jets to operate the ultra-long haul route.
The airline has spent almost five years working on so-called “Project Sunrise” , plotting record-breaking flights of more than 20 hours from Sydney to London and Sydney to New York. The home is decorated in traditional Australian federational style
