Chinese government buys £57 million mansion in Hong Kong for national security officials

A luxury villa in an exclusive Hong Kong development has been sold to the secretive Chinese government office overseeing national security in the territory.

The Office for Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong — which was set up in 2020 to supervise a Beijing-imposed clampdown after widespread unrest — bought the mansion for HK$508 million (£57 million) from Kerry Properties, owned by the billionaire Kuok family.

The three-storey villa in Kowloon has five bedrooms, three car parking spaces, a garden and a lift. It is part of the Mont Rouge development that is described as “a residential jewel” with “panoramic views, low density and luxuriant living”.
