Southampton Village Awarded $500K Grant To Restore Rogers Mansion

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — An iconic Southampton mansion will soon be receiving a facelift.

Southampton Village was recently awarded a $500,000 Environmental Protection Fund grant from the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for

the restoration of Rogers Mansion, Mayor Jesse Warren said.

The funds will be used for work on the exterior of the building, including repairs to the chimney, shutters, roof, windows and doors.

“Thank you to New York State for helping us preserve the history of Southampton,” Warren said. “This was truly a community effort, and I want to thank all the local organizations and leaders who gave their support to our application. Rogers Mansion and the Southampton History Museum is a place to learn about our shared heritage as a village. With these funds, we will be able to ensure that future generations are able to continue appreciating our past.”

Rogers Mansion was built in 1843 and is currently home to the Southampton History Museum. The Gilded Age mansion sits on property that was awarded to William Rogers in 1645. The building remained in the Rogers family for eight generations until in 1899, when it was purchased by Samuel L. Parrish, the founder of the Parrish Art Museum, village officials said.

In1, 943 the village acquired the mansion, where it became home to organizations such as the YMCA and the Red Cross — until, in 1952, the Southampton History Museum first leased the building. In 2012 the Rogers Mansion Museum Complex was designated a unique designation on the National Register of Historic Places.

Southampton History Museum Trustee Seán Deneny added: “This generous grant serves to prove the importance of restoring our great Southampton History Museum and surrounding grounds. Preserving our heritage is crucial. The state’s recognition is gratifying and helps ensure a glorious future for our community and the timeless status of the Museum.”
