U.S. Senate candidate Alex Lasry and his wife Lauren have bought a historic mansion on Milwaukee’s east side known as the Jessie and John F. Kern House.

The Lasrys bought the 1899 home on N. Wahl Avenue just west of Bradford Beach for $1.5 million to be their primary residence according to state property records. The property was listed for $1.625 million.

Jeffery and Karin Hembrock sold the property to the couple.

Alex Lasry is on leave from his job as the executive vice president of the Milwaukee Bucks. His father is part of the ownership group that bought the team in 2014. Alex Lasry has a trust that is valued at more than $50 million. He is now running for a U.S. Senate seat.

Alex and Lauren Lasry got married in 2020 and welcomed their first child earlier this year.

The brick home was constructed in the German Renaissance Revival style, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society . The home is part of both state and national registers of historic places. It is part of the North Point Historic District.

The twelve-room home is more than 5,600 square feet, according to the listing. It has five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The home originally had six bedrooms, but one of the smaller bedrooms was combined with the primary bedroom to create a single suite with a lounge.

The house was built in a style that was being used to construct suburban villas in the new suburbs of German cities like Berlin, according to the historical society. The architect of the home, Carl Barkhausen studied there.

“At the time of its construction, building houses in the architectural styles then most fashionable in Germany was all the rage among Milwaukee’s wealthy German-American citizens,” the historical society page on the home said. “These people deliberately chose to emulate German styles rather than American ones, with the result that houses like the Kern residence are very distinctive and foreign looking, which is what makes them so interesting to look at today.”

The house has elements of the German Renaissance Revival style like a medieval looking corner turret, an arcaded entry porch and a large front gable.

An addition was added in 1917 and the detached garage was built in 1961, according to the historical society.

The mansion was one of the first homes to be built on Wahl Avenue. John Kern operated Milwaukee’s Eagle Flour Mill, which in the 1850s was ranked among the largest in the country. John and Jessie Kern lived in the home until they built a new home in 1924 at 3233 N. Lake Drive, according to the historical society.
